Michael Koehler is the founder, Artistic Director and Music Director of the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra — an ensemble rooted in the city of Bach, Mendelssohn and the Gewandhaus tradition.

An orchestra in the city of Bach and Mendelssohn

Michael Koehler founded the Leipzig KammerPhilharmonie in 2000 and the Leipzig Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007, and has presented concerts as its Artistic and Music Director ever since. The orchestra performs in Leipzig and on tour, with programmes ranging from the Viennese classics and the great Romantic symphonies to contemporary works.

Concerts have taken the ensemble to major German halls including the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Dresden Kulturpalast, the Beethovenhalle Bonn, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf and the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, as well as on international tours through Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Asia.

The orchestra's work has been supported by grants from the German Federal President, the Federal Government Minister for Culture and the Media, the German Music Council, the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Cultural Foundation of Saxony and the City of Leipzig.
